Local residents in Spa Court are celebrating today following the decision last night by the Town Council to write to Wiltshire Council asking for the Lorry Park in King Street Car Park to be closed “at the earliest opportunity”.
The motion, brought to the council meeting by local Town Councillor Jon Hubbard, was approved with only one dissenting vote, that of Mayor Richard Wiltshire.
Speaking after the meeting Cllr Hubbard said, “I am delighted that the council has agreed with myself and with local residents that it is unacceptable that the lorries are parked in this town centre location.”
“I have visited the site and experienced the conditions for myself. The lorry park itself is covered in litter and waste, and on a sunny day the smell is just unbearable. Only those who live in this area can really testify to the horrors of having a lorry start up at 4am in the morning right outside your bedroom window!”
“I hope that Wiltshire Council will recognise the importance and urgency of this issue and address the issue in the immediate future. It is also vital that a proper out-of-town site is identified and proper facilities provided for the lorry drivers as soon as possible.”
